Practicing Gratitude. Again.

I am at my happiest and most authentic when I'm consistently and openly counting my blessings.  It's a practice that I really worked to cultivate years ago, and one that I blogged about pretty regularly.  Although the formal practice has waxed and waned over time,  I always come back around to it when I am trying to shift into a more positive, motivated, mindful place.  Which is exactly what I am doing now.  So,  here we go...

 Tonight, I'm grateful for:
*My family and friends, who are always willing to listen and to help me out when I need it.  This single, working, trying-to-have-a-life parent thing would not work as well as it does without them behind the scenes.
*Afterschool care that keeps Riley active, engaged and learning.
*Upcoming travel plans.  We have a Spring Break trip coming up in a few weeks, and I'm planning an end-of-school-year Surprise vacation for the Girl.  (Shhhhh....) It's nice to have something to anticipate.
* Reruns of "The Office" and Pinterest Humor Boards.  As silly (lame, pathetic, whatever) as it sounds, these two things have saved my sanity the past few weeks.  Whenever things get to be just too much, a little humor break brings me back to calm.

Sunday night brain scramble

*Wow. Where did June go? Seriously...wasn't Memorial Day weekend last week?

*Wanna see what Riley and I cooked up for breakfast this morning?
They were her idea and so yummy. Try not to be jealous. Come on over, and we'll make it for you, too.

*I'm finding that going through the process of selling my condo is by far one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever had to do. I do not like having people I don't know in my space. I do not like keeping all my personal stuff packed away, so people can imagine themselves in an impersonal, neutral condo. I do not like getting calls and texts from a realtor every day (Don't get me wrong, my agent is great. I just don't like thinking about this stuff all the time.) I don't mind keeping it "show ready" (i thought I would) but let's just say I hope this process is done and over very, VERY soon.

*I need some new workout music. Badly. If you have any suggestions, send them my way.

*I've noticed that my summer reading list consists of much lighter topics than any other time of the year. It must be that "summer-beach-reading" mode has been permanently burned into my DNA because I am plowing through mystery novels, re-reading old favorites, and enjoying new light, easy reads. I have simply put aside the idea that I am going to get to anything of substance any time soon. Again, all summer book reading suggestions are welcome.

*I booked the flights for an October trip to Disneyland/SeaWorld for me and my girl. We will be meeting my sister and her husband and the twinners there, and I am so excited (didn't ever expect to say that about a trip to Disneyland, but whatever.) Telling Riley this early may have been a mistake. She is already planning her princess outfits.

*Speaking of my sister and her men, they will all arrive at my place on Wednesday (insert shouts of delight here!) It's my grandfather's 80th birthday party this weekend, so they are traveling in for that and will stick around for the holiday weekend. We will all head to Idaho to later this week celebrate his birthday, the birthday's of two of my nieces, and the fourth of July. I can't wait for a weekend of family, parties, parades and my favorite kiddos ever!

*As if that is not enough, two of my best friends will be in town over the next few weeks, as well. Hannah is coming in on the Eighth, and Cameron and her Jersey brood arrive late tonight. I can't wait to catch up with these ladies and see their families.

*Did I mention I'm getting a new nephew sometime in the next couple of weeks? I cannot wait to meet him. Maybe he'll make his debut while we are up there (here's hoping!)

*July is going to fly by as fast as June did, but I'm not complaining. There is a lot of good stuff happening around here.

What's on your mind tonight? What good things are happening in your world?

What's Good for Me Today

G's birthday cupcakes

**There are not many situations where a cupcake is not appreciated.
**It's so much fun to be 'burst-out-of-your-skin' happy about someone else's good news. Seriously, I have been walking around with a random, dreamy smile on my face all evening because of this type of feeling.
**I am much more productive and happy at work when I have too much to do. It's weird, I know, but I love to be busy!
**I am both overjoyed that biking season is almost upon us, and a bit depressed that the ski season is pretty much over. For someone who has never enjoyed winter before, this is a HUGE step in the right direction.
**I've spent time with several different friends this week, and it's been a lovely week, indeed. Coincidence? I think not.
**I do so enjoy the fact that it's staying light later, and that the time changes this weekend. Bring on Spring!
**Hawaii. Six weeks away. I'm just sayin'....(kelly b., just for you, baby).

Hair Fashion Tips from The Girl

Riley has been really into styling her hair like "Barbie" lately. Observe:

(I'm sure you can see the resemblance, right?)

She has been kind enough to demonstrate her styling technique to the blogosphere, so you, too, can look like she thinks Barbie looks.

Any donations you'd care to send this way will be applied to her college savings account.

Because heaven knows, this child needs to be directed towards college, and definitely not to beauty school.

A day for dreaming

Sultry afternoons soaking in the sun and sand on a faraway beach.
Long bike rides through the mountains, stopping at Sundance for lunch.
Lazy weekend afternoons, made entertaining by the addition of a wading pool and popsicles.
Sundresses and flip-flops and ponytails and sunscreen.
Outdoor concerts, complete with cool canyon breezes and breathtaking sunsets.
Summer nights in Bear Lake, the sky a map of a thousand stars.
Dancing on the trampoline with my nieces.
Wandering through the Farmer's Market, finding fresh produce and flowers and herbs.
Exploring Central Park with my little one, the first time for both of us.
Basking in the warmth of my friends and family and the summer sun.
Today has been a day for dreaming, a day for dreaming of summer.

It's the simple things

One truth the Girl has learned early on:
There is not much a hot 'bubble-y' bath and a cup of tea won't cure (particularly when the tea is bubble-y, too).

"Healthy and Strong"

Now that Riley is getting a bit older, one of the things that I am really enjoying is the opportunity I have to share some of the things I love with her. Not only do I get to spend more quality time with her, but it also provides a chance for me to teach her about those things I value. We've been talking a lot lately about what it means to be "Healthy and Strong", how important it is to live an active lifestyle, and how lucky we are to live in a place with such beautiful surroundings.
I got her out on snowshoes for the first time today, and the Girl took to it like a fish to water. Granted, we only tromped around our front yard for a while so she could get the feel of maneuvering her feet with big shoes attached, but she did great-fantastic balance and completely at ease right from the start. We have big plans to tackle the short hike in Memory Grove tomorrow afternoon and we're both excited to see how it goes.
I love being able to teach my daughter through my example to be active, and that living a "Healthy and Strong Life" is an important thing to strive for. It's fun for me to see her enjoy the outdoors and want to try something I love to do. Another thing I love about these photos is that I can see evidence of me here: ponytail, yoga pants, fleece and snowshoes.

Yep, she's my girl alright.

Super Productive Monday

I came home from work today determined to catch up on laundry from the weekend, get some grocery shopping done, finish up a writing project I've had on the back-burner for a while, and go to spin. Riley is with her Dad tonight, and I thought it would be a great idea to start off the week in a productive mode.

Um....yeah. I didn't do any of that.

Instead, I have:

-taken a long, hot bath with bubbles from Riley's Mr. Bubble (because I'm classy like that).
-laid on my bed and listened to a meditation to help release back and neck tension (I don't know if it works but I'm giving it a try).
-drank club soda out of a light-up martini glass (the blue light is my favorite).
-made whole-wheat molasses bread from this recipe (Sooooo yummy and very healthy).
-made chex mix with baby goldfish crackers (I promised Riley I would).
-made dinner for tomorrow (apparently, I'm in the mood to cook).
-oohed and aahed over pics of my adorable nieces (don't take my word for it. Look for yourself at how cute they are!)
-admired my adorable daughter (she took the cookie decorating very seriously).
-painted my toenails (blue nails, pink flowers).
-brushed my dog and attempted to paint his nails (did. not. go. well.).
-talked for 8 minutes to a friend who is, for reasons I cannot even fathom, heading to Cairo (Safe travels, NR. Send me a present).
-considered doing some Yoga but instead laid on my floor and listed to a yoga mix (which is, you know, sorta like doing Yoga).
-and read a couple of chapters from Pride and Prejudice (because a chill evening is best when accompanied by Elizabeth Bennett).

How's that for a productive evening?

I didn't do a single thing I had intended to do, but I'm happy with it all the same. And now I'm off to bed. I'm tired after all that stuff I accomplished this evening.

Blissed Out (Gratitude Friday)

It's almost 2 am and I am coming off of several days of having a sick child, a messy house, and a very backlogged to-do list. I am tired, I haven't eaten well or worked out for several days and I'm still feeling some leftover emotion after having dealt with a few lingering personal issues over the past couple of days.

Seems like a recipe for a meltdown, no?

But you know what? That's not where I am tonight.

Tonight, I am completely blissed out.

Despite the sick kiddo.
Despite the messy house.
Despite the list of stuff I need to get done.
Despite putting to rest the remnants of a complicated relationship.

Instead, I'm thinking about my night full of friends and laughter, an impromptu brownie baking session (not my best ever, but we ate them anyway), some hair dyeing, random comments from G$, some closet organization courtesy of Jenica, a little bit of text flirting, and a whole lot of goodness. I'm blissed out, I tell you.

B*L*I*S*S*E*D O*U*T.

Lately I've been thinking (and talking) a lot about the concept that we are all responsible for our own happiness, and that when we choose to be happy and then consciously create our lives so that it rests upon a strong foundation of happiness, we are protected when the inevitably harder parts of life show up. If we work to make this foundation strong and to keep it whole, the things that might otherwise rock our worlds may still cause some waves, but they can't shake our foundation of happiness. It's something I've tested out and know that it works well for me. I have spent a lot of time and energy building a life that I love, and when weeks like this one come, I'm reminded of how grateful I am for such a life, for this foundation.

This week has basically been a wash for me in the work department (having missed almost three days to care for Riley). I'm dreadfully behind and will likely be working all weekend to catch up. These types of weeks are inevitable. They happen, despite our careful planning and best efforts. Kids get sick. Life gets messy. Relationships end. Tragedies occur. It's part of life to have day, weeks, months, sometimes even years, where it seems like nothing is going right. And this is where that foundation becomes crucial, becomes critical.

Building this foundation is going to be a different process for everyone, because everyone's needs and desires are going to differ. My foundation starts with amazing friends and family who love and support me, and a wonderful daughter who is the greatest gift I've ever been given. Add to that a job that fulfills me, interests that keep me healthy and strong, faith in something bigger than myself, and a desire to learn and grow each and every day. Little by little, as I focus on these things, as I make them a priority, my foundation gets stronger and stronger and the hard times, well... they aren't so bad.

So today, as part of my continual practice of acknowledging and expressing gratitude for the good things in my life, I'm going to focus on those things that help me build my happiness foundation, that help me keep it strong, and that are instrumental in helping me create the life I love. Today, after a night of good times and laughter, I'm grateful for friends who clean my bathroom mirrors and fold my laundry while we talk and who not just listen but hear. They add so much to my foundation of happiness and the gift of their friendship has sustained me through a lot of hard times. And I'm not limiting this to those that were here in my home tonight, but to all of my wonderful friends who give me so much. Thank you, thank you. THANK YOU.

On this monday evening

Tonight, I am...

*feeling very grateful and very protected and very pleased with how my life feels these days.
*reviewing my photos from a photo shoot with my brother's family. Want a little sneak peek?
(I shot this in manual - I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.)
*marinating in Liz Elayne's words; here. Powerful words, powerful emotion. I'm amazed and inspired by her bravery and grace.
*cleaning up after a weekend full of out of town fun and goodness. There is so much laundry - I swear it multiplies while I am at work.
*listening to some newly added music: Jack Johnson, Sara Barielles and a new to me but older Ray LaMontagne (my love affair with his voice continues....mmmmm....).
*deciding that having Riley skip her afternoon nap might be a good thing - she's out cold by 8:30, giving me some desperately needed "me time".
*treating myself to some new books from Amazon. It's been too long since I had a "to Amy, with Love from Amy" package arrive. (what are you reading these days?)
*missing my girlfriends and my sister. Some serious girl time is needed this week. All you local girlies take note-let's ride, let's run, let's eat, let's play, let's dance! Those of you who are far away - be warned...you're next!
*Enjoying the little things that brightened up my day - a text with a video of the twinners, a sweet, slightly goofy and fully adorable message from DMV, the dessert my neighbor just dropped by for me, a phone call from this woman.
*anticipating my phone date with my friend/therapist/life coach/personal psychic/all around wonderful friend, Stormy.
*Loving life. I gotta say, it's pretty great....pretty great, indeed.

Weekend at home

As I was driving back to Salt Lake City today after a relaxing weekend with family, I spent some time reflecting on why it is that I always feel incredibly centered and very peaceful after time in Idaho.

It might be the traffic we encounter: Or maybe the people we spend our time with:

Or the scenery we pass by, evidence of hard work and simple existence:
It could be the way I spent my Saturday morning:
Or the way we celebrated Saturday night:

Whatever it is, I've learned not to question it. When my whole heart and soul is longing for somewhere that is comfortable, that is easy, that is gentle and that is healing...this is where I go.

This is home.

Lessons I keep learning

I've been doing a lot of personal writing over the summer; processing different situations, examining the stories in my head, exploring different relationships. I've been re-reading and editing over the past few days and now that most pieces of the whole are laid out before me, I'm starting to see a few themes, a few ideas I can work with. It's been very therapeutic to just let all the words and emotions out, let them cascade until there is nothing left. This is where I find that the real work is, making sense of the various artifacts that a life full of experience and relationships leaves behind.

Most of this is too personal and raw to share here (and likely boring to anyone other than me) but there have been a few lessons learned that I think are worthwhile to pass along. Of course, you already know this stuff, but here are a few of the lessons I keep learning, over and over again.

I am stronger than I ever realized.
And so are you.

I am braver than I ever realized.
And so are you.

There are people who love me, who have my back.
And people who love you and have yours.

My story matters.
And so does yours.

I have the power to make my life look exactly how I want it to.
And so do you.

I can trust in myself.
And so can you.

I can trust in others.
And so can you.

I am held by something much bigger than myself.
And so are you.

I am responsible for my own happiness.
And you are responsible for yours.

I can keep getting up, keeping dusting myself off, and keep moving forward.
And so can you.

Extreme Self Care: Weekend Edition

The past couple of months, I have been living in what I have titled "Extreme self-care mode". In a nutshell, this means I've been doing whatever is best for me (and Riley - she's an integral part of the decisions) so I can stay on top of my game. Taking care of number one. This has meant focusing on my priorities, saying no to those things I don't really want to do (that I normally would agree to), setting boundaries with people and situations that suck my energy, spending time on those things that fill me up, and making time for those people who love and understand me and for those causes that I truly believe in. I've drastically decreased the amount of time I spend online and have started turning my phone off a lot. I am making a conscious effort to be present in my interactions with others and also making sure to take care of my physical health by getting plenty of exercise and plenty of sleep.

This type of self-care has also meant taking the initiative to do the things that aren't much fun, but keep our lives running smoothly - things like making (and keeping) medical and dental checkups, keeping my house clean and organized, staying on top of the laundry instead of waiting for it to overtake my home, taking time to plan healthy meals and shop for groceries, and making sure my car and home are kept in good repair. It's not always fun, but I am finding my life works best when I function in "Extreme self-care mode".

Riley is with her dad for this whole weekend, and I am really excited to have some time to myself. I have a lot of plans for the weekend, and they all seem to circle back to this idea of "Extreme Self Care". I guess that means that I'm incorporating this type of thinking on a subconscious level, integrating it into my daily life. For me, this is a really good thing.

On the docket this weekend:
  • cleaning my house and car
  • running several errands
  • hanging some photos that I am having printed
  • making fresh salsa and enchiladas for lunch with friends
  • long bike ride on Saturday morning
  • swimming/biking brick workout tonight
  • working on my September project (writing time and a photo date with myself)
  • date with DMV Saturday night (we're going on a hike, then out to dinner, then a concert - fun!)
  • getting a massage
  • seeing an old friend who is in town for a few days
Looks like a lovely way to spend the weekend, doesn't it?

So tell me, what are your weekend plans? Are they things that help you take care of yourself?

Five (Really) Good Things

1. I've been planning a big meeting for work for the past few months, and it was held today. It went fab. u. lous. Better than I expected, truthfully, and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. It's gratifying to having something like this out of the way and to see how my efforts pay off in a 'big picture' sort of way. And now that it's over, I can breathe a little easier and move on to some other projects in the works.

2. My daughter had her three year Well-Child Checkup with her pediatrician yesterday. Her doc is also a good friend of mine, and Riley
adores her, so when "Dr. Julie" told her that she needed to eat good food and get lots of sleep so she'd be healthy and strong, Riley took it to heart. She's eating better already and telling me over and over that "Dr. Julie said to eat healthy foods". Riley checked out healthy and well above her age in motor skills, cognitive skills and learning. She seems to be thriving.

3. I've always really enjoyed spending time with my kiddo, but lately, we seem to have fun on a much different level. Maybe it's because she's a little bit older, but it seems that there is less "mothering" on my part, and more just
playing (does that make sense?) We've been doing lots of art projects, having impromputu dance parties and sing-a-longs, going for walks, tea parties, and reading together. It's been fun to experience this part of parenthood, especially when the rest of it can sometimes feel like so much work.

4. Riley loves to help me around the house, I've been working on channeling that into something useful and actually helpful. Knowing that my girl loves to be recognized for the good things she does, I created her "flowerpot" which is basically a way to document when she does her chores. Each flower represents one thing she is supposed to do each day (brush her teeth, put her clothes away, etc.) and she puts them in her flowerpot when they are done. When all six flowers are in the pot, she gets a special 'flowerpot' treat (Hershey's Kiss).

It's been working so well! She does everything without being reminded and she's become an expert bed-maker. No complaints here!

5. I'm hanging out with my girls tonight - there is probably some painting and some jewelry making on the menu. I'm so happy to have a low-key, no stress evening with some of my favorite people. That's a really good thing, in my book.

Gratitude Friday (On Saturday, but whatever...)

This has been a whirlwind week, full of lots of fun and good times, and I'm just barely finding time to sit and write the gratitude Friday list I have been composing in my head since yesterday. It's funny, because the crazy-busy weeks are the ones where I feel like I need to write these the most. For some reason, the busy days seem to make me more aware of the great things I have going for me.

**Riley and I have been able to spend some time with four of my favorite people this week - my sister and her husband and my super-adorable twinner nephews. Oh, how I adore this family.
**I made a bit of a breakthrough on some work problems I've been mulling over/working through recently. There are still kinks to work out, but it's giving me a renewed sense of satisfaction and a lot to look forward to.

**I've felt a bit 'off' this summer, in terms of working towards the physical goals I have, but I seemed to have found my mojo again over the past couple of weeks. I love the feeling of being very tired, rather sore, but happy to be so because it means I have pushed past another barrier.

**To celebrate Riley's birthday, we had a little party for her in her daycare classroom. It is always so reassuring for me to see how loved and well-cared for she is there. I know that there are all kinds of horror stories about daycare out there, but I've been nothing but thrilled with her experiences. Being in daycare gives my daughter the social development that she needs at this age, and she learns so much from her peers and the dedicated teachers. I'm so grateful for everyone there.
**This past week, I had an experience that, while very difficult emotionally and mentally, turned out to be an opportunity to really stretch and grow. I walked away from it feeling stronger, more sure of myself and my decisions, and happy to be where I am at. These are the kinds of experiences that shape us into who we become, and while I am just fine to never repeat some of them, I'm truly grateful for them.

**And since it's September 4th, which is my personal self-proclaimed holiday (read about it here), I'll end this post by saying how grateful I am for how far I have come, personally, in the past three years, and for who I am today. For the amazing family and friends who are there for me, no matter what, and for everything they've taught me on my way. Today, instead of throwing a party or indulging in some shopping or spa-time, I have chosen instead to be very mindful of the blessings I have... For life and love, for family and friends, for challenges and celebrations, for health and healing...Today, (and everyday) I am grateful.

Soaking it up

Lots of good stuff going on over here. Riley and I have all sorts of merriment planned for the next several weeks....a weekend in Bear Lake with old friends, several end of summer barbecues and parties, the possibility of a weekend in DisneyLand for our mutual birthday, moab biking trips, a couple more triathlons and a few more evenings of outdoor music. We are reveling in the company of our wonderful friends and amazing family before the demands of school set it.

There is nothing like summer fun and we are soaking it up!

What are your end-of-summer plans?
